Cleavers (Galium aparine)

Traditionally valued in Western herbalism as a "lymphatic" herb and mild diuretic, often recommended for skin conditions. While it carries a long history of use, human clinical trials have not demonstrated effects on leg swelling or lymph flow. Its reputation rests on tradition rather than scientific evidence. Generally considered a low-risk herb.

Red Clover Blossom (Trifolium pratense)

Contains isoflavones, plant compounds with oestrogen-like activity. Research has focused primarily on menopause symptom relief—particularly hot flushes—with mixed and modest outcomes; bone health benefits remain less established. Historically described as a "blood purifier" in traditional herbalism for skin health, though this use lacks scientific validation. No evidence supports benefits for blood pooling or vein health.

Important cautions: The oestrogen-like effects make this unsuitable for individuals with hormone-sensitive cancers, such as certain breast cancers. May interact with blood thinners. Not recommended during pregnancy.

Stillingia Root (Stillingia sylvatica)

A historical herbal remedy popular in the 1800s as a purgative and component of "alterative" blood-cleansing formulas for skin conditions. No clinical trials exist for any of its uses, and no evidence supports effects on kidney function or urine clarity. Contains irritant compounds; larger doses may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and gastrointestinal irritation. The fresh root form is most irritating and carries the weakest safety profile of the three ingredients.
